Taking the first step to make change in your life and accept support can sometimes feel the most challenging. As a counsellor at a sober living house prior to my work with First Step Men's Therapy, I gained extensive experience working with men from all walks of life, including those struggling with addiction, depression, grief, low self-esteem, anger, anxiety, and relationship issues. I understand that men often struggle with societal expectations of masculinity and the pressure to suppress their emotions, and use a holistic approach to help men address the underlying causes of their mental health concerns.
In my work, I have noticed men come to therapy for many reasons and express these needs from a therapist:
A safe and comfortable environment: I believe that men should feel that they can be open and honest with their therapist and that their therapist will provide a non-judgmental, supportive space for them to explore their thoughts and feelings.
A therapist who understands the unique challenges men face: Men may struggle with societal expectations of masculinity, pressure to suppress emotions, and stigma around seeking help. I am a therapist who understands these challenges can help men feel more comfortable and understood.
A focus on practical solutions: Men may be more motivated to work towards practical solutions rather than focusing on emotions and feelings. I aim to be a therapist that can provide men with practical strategies to help them overcome their challenges.
Emphasis on self-compassion and self-acceptance: Men often struggle with self-worth and self-esteem, and I believe that a therapist should teach men how to be kind and compassionate to themselves as well as acceptance for who they are.
Encourage men to take responsibility for their thoughts and feelings: Men are often taught to avoid vulnerability and emotional expression, but I believe that therapy can help men take ownership of their thoughts and feelings, which can be empowering and lead to positive change.
A willingness to address underlying issues: Men's mental health issues may be rooted in past experiences or traumas. I strive to be a therapist willing to help men explore these underlying issues and work through them to achieve long-term healing.
Some of my past clients have reached out because of interpersonal issues, addiction, or other mental health concerns. I have found it helpful to spend time trying to understand your past thinking and behaviour so that you can find meaning moving forward in your life. My goal is for you to have better insight into yourself and for you to feel better equipped to deal with any challenges you are faced with in the future.
